Cities for Park(ing) Day !

I love this one. I have been looking for a long time for this event. How can a parking space transform a public space? It is not a small area although it sounds tiny area( almost 170 square feet).

“Transforming parking space into public space” — that’s the mission of Park(ing) Day and it’s quickly catching on.  Since the movement was founded in 2005, in San Francisco, by Rebar (an interdisciplinary studio working at the intersection of art, design and ecology ) it has gone on to become a worldwide event.  As of 2011, this grassroots day was celebrated in 162 cities, 35 countries, and 6 continents—ultimately creating 975 temporary parks!
Known as Park(ing) Day, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of public space often thought of solely for cars. In essence, this event celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the world, while raising awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in our urban areas.
While I applaud each city for their involvement and vision, below are my top cities that showcase stunning displays of creative thinking.
10.  Washington, DC

In 2011, two council members arranged for their spots to be converted to two temporary parks in front of the Wilson Building. With the help of Washington Parks and People these spaces were converted into parks offering relaxation, exercise, and guidance for nutrition led by the DC Department of Health.
9. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville’s reputation stems beyond music and this year over 30 spaces around the downtown core will be transformed into small parks. Perhaps visitors may encounter music-related parks.  Imagine Park(ing) Day at night in Nashville?
8. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Celebrating its 6-year anniversary, Park(ing) Day in Philadelphia offers an impressive and growing display.  In 2011, over 30 non-profit institutions, community development organizations, academic institutions, and private companies created temporary parks throughout a vast assortment of neighborhoods.  2013 brings additional excitement as over 50 organizations are participating—creating temporary parks, promoting socialization, education, art, and entertainment.
7. Seattle, Washington

Park(ing) Day allows Seattleites to temporarily make parking spaces into parks—not that they need a day dedicated for it. The event ultimately raises awareness about advocating for walkable, livable, and healthy cities. Who can argue that?
6.  Los Angeles, California

Angelenos are in year seven of challenging the status quo of streets.  In 2011, amidst a heated debate involving Los Angeles City Hall and Los Angeles urban gardeners, many sought  to incorporate “edible gardens” into their theme.  LA surely doesn’t lack creativity!
5. Montreal, Canada

After a successful 2012 endeavor, Montreal has its eyes set on becoming the largest Park(ing) Day event in the world!  In 2013, they seek to convert over 200 parking spaces into parks.  Just envision if those parks became permanent!
4.  New York City, New York

The “City that Never Sleeps “is at it again.  This time they’re taking on parking spots and twisting the boundaries.  In 2011, New York City re-imagined 30 parking spots and that number is certain to grow in this year’s event.
3. Dublin, Ireland

Heralded as one of the biggest Park(ing) Day cities, Dublin is excited to showcase their temporary parks to the world.  Perhaps the participating teams will celebrate another successful year with a round of brews.
2. Adelaide, Australia

Australia’s fifth most populous city offers a diverse selection of Park(ing) Day conceptions.  From photo booths and art galleries to edible gardens and gyms it’s bound to have something for all.  The 2013 campaign includes 34 teams and highlights the work of a vast array of groups.
1. San Francisco, California

It’s no surprise that Rebar, the founding art and design collective of Park(ing) Day, who are based in San Francisco claims the top spot.  While the event launched in 2005 featuring a rather primitive temporary park, it has blossomed into a celebration full of creativity and goes beyond park typologies—with San Francisco leading the way!
While re-imagining 170 square feet of public space appears to be insignificant, make no mistake, Park(ing) Day instills inspiration and hope into our cities.  By taking a much-needed break from the rigors of daily life, this event affords the world the opportunity to work collectively towards a common goal—celebrating public space
